Centre for Functional Ecology
Abstract
The Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE) of the University of Coimbra was originally approved as an independent R&D unit in the last FCT assessment in 2007. Thus, this is the first formal evaluation exercise since the formation of the CFE. Initially, CFE integrated 18 researchers from ecology and related areas, the vast majority from the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra. Since then, the CFE experienced a remarkable growth in size, scope and impact, currently integrating 49 researchers, and triplicating the number of Master and PhD students. This highly positive evolution is reflected in all productivity indicators, from the number of researchers, the publication of manuscripts in international ISI journals (from 34 in 2008, to 101 in 2012) to the amount of secured funding from national and international calls. In addition to seeking scientific excellence, the CFE has made a strong effort in transferring the produced knowledge to the general public, constantly engaging in science communication programs, and has increasingly worked with the private sector in developing new technological solutions that promote a sustainable use of natural resources and stimulate regional and national economy. These dynamics led to the proposed organisation of the CFE in five closely collaborating research groups, sharing a common strategic vision: 1. Terrestrial Ecosystems and Global Change; 2. Marine and Coastal Processes; 3. Biodiversity and Evolution; 4. Natural Resources, Sustainability, and Human Development; 5. History of Science, Scientific Communication and Dissemination.
