The regulatory framework for wine production in Brazil is governed by the Brazilian Wine Law. Such a framework is characterized by hetero-regulation, operating a whole set of rules from competencies commanded by the Ministry of Agriculture, but also in which Embrapa, the National Institute of Industrial Property and state and municipal agriculture secretaries have a role. Based on data and characteristics of the Portuguese wine regulation system, this study describes the Brazilian regulatory framework, analyzing the incipient manifestation of self - regulation, which characterizes wine regulation in Portugal and Europe. The study shows how the implementation of the Geographical Indications regime in Brazil, in addition to the qualitative improvement of the Brazilian wines provoked by their exposure to competition, was the starting point for the establishment of instruments and structures for self - regulation of specific wine production and its certification.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXxThe regulatory framework for wine production in Brazil is governed by the Brazilian Wine Law.
