Title: | Os discursos sobre o Conhecimento da Leishmaniose Humana em Portugal | Authors: | Silva, Carolina Farinha Batista Moreira da | Orientador: | Santos, Ana Luísa Maia, Marta Antunes |
Keywords: | leishmaniose; subnotificação; desconhecimento; Educação em Saúde; discursos; leishmaniasis; underreporting; unawareness; Health Education; discourses | Issue Date: | 9-Sep-2015 | Place of publication or event: | Coimbra | Abstract: | A leishmaniose é uma infeção parasitária transmitida pela picada de um inseto.
Leishmaniasis is a parasite infection transmitted by an insect bite. It is endemic at least in 98 countries, and is expressed in 6 types, three of which are the most common: cutaneous, mucocutaneos and visceral leishmaniasis. Portugal is one of the endemic countries in the Mediterranean basin. As in the other European countries, where reporting of this (human) disease is mandatory, the underreporting is notorious. Moreover, there are several references as to the unawareness of this disease with published studies on techniques of disclosure. To contribute for the disease research in Portugal, the aim of the present study is to collect data on disease unawareness in different population groups to have a start point for future research in this area and/or possible Health Education projects. As infectious diseases are integrated in a biological and social context, Health Education is used as a sharing tool of disease knowledge and as catalyst for changes in risk behaviour. Being a social appropriation of discourses, Education creates individual groups according to the type of discourse, such as the medical and non-medical individuals. Therefore, the present study is based on these two different groups. Through semi structured interviews, sensitivity of the disease was gauged from 16 physicians and the disease knowledge was studied from 16 students at the University of Coimbra. Using an online survey the knowledge of this disease was assessed through 121 individuals located nationwide. From the interviews it was concluded that seven individuals had never heard of the disease, and the knowledge of this is little and depends of being doctor, having case experience and being specialist of infectious diseases. Of the 121 enquired, 84 knew of the disease and of the 67 that left an opinion, suggested further disclosure actions about it. Not only it is necessary to disseminate the information about this disease among medical and non-medical individuals, but also that disclosure be correspondent and extensive to different discursive groups, so that changing risk behaviour and a decrease in underreporting takes place. |
