A Pandemia e a Saúde Mental das Crianças: Preparação de um Estudo

Abstract

O presente relatório pretende dar conta de um estágio curricular realizado no âmbito de um estudo executado pela Rede Europeia Anti-Pobreza (EAPN Portugal). Este consistiu na documentação e análise das consequências da pandemia COVID-19, particularmente do confinamento vivido durante os primeiros meses do ano de 2020 na saúde das crianças em idade escolar, com ênfase na sua saúde mental. A realização deste estágio, nos primeiros meses do ano de 2021, foi condicionada pela situação vivida neste período, que o orientou para um trabalho teórico e bibliográfico.O estudo pretendeu contribuir para a crescente literatura relativa aos impactos da pandemia de COVID-19 ao nível da saúde mental, privilegiando a análise de um setor demográfico que, embora menos afetado ao nível das complicações de saúde e de doença agravada, se encontra numa situação especial por sofrer as privações inerentes ao combate à pandemia numa época particularmente vulnerável das suas vidas: os seus anos formativos. Este estudo baseia-se em testemunhos de crianças em idade escolar, obtidos através da realização de focus groups pelo território nacional.O presente trabalho apresenta uma síntese alargada da revisão da literatura sobre a temática do estudo. De seguida, apresenta e discute o contexto empírico de implementação do estudo. tal permitiu dar conta das dinâmicas de pesquisa nas ciências sociais, marcadas pela confrontação, no terreno empírico, com contingências variadas e a necessidade de encontrar soluções adequadas, que por vezes alteram elementos variados do desenho inicial dos projetos de pesquisa. O relatório conclui com uma reflexão sobre os contributos e aprendizagens realizadas no decorrer do estágio.Os resultados do estudo deverão ser publicados no decorrer de 2022, encontrando- se em fase de redação e tratamento da informação à época da redação deste relatório.

The document in hand is an account of a curricular internship carried out in the context of a study planned and developed by the EAPN Portugal network. This study consisted in documenting and analyzing the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly as the lockdown experienced in the early months of the year 2020 is concerned, on school-aged children’s health, emphasizing mental health. The completion of this internship was deeply conditioned by the pandemic situation in the first half of 2021, which oriented it toward a theoretical contribution to the study, as opposed to field work.This study aims to contribute to the growing body of literature concerning the impact of the aforementioned pandemic on mental health, prioritizing a demographic which, despite being at a reduced risk of severe illness and health complications, is faced with the deprivations inherent to the preventative measures implemented in the struggle against the virus at a particularly vulnerable stage in its life: its formative years. This study was based on the testimonies of school-aged children, obtained through a series of groups conducted throughout the country.This document presents, in synthetic form, the literature review conducted on this theme, whilst discussing the empirical context of the elaboration of the study. Such a context allowed for a deeper understanding of the dynamics of social science research as confronted by the various contingencies presented by the field itself, as well as the need to settle upon adequate solutions in response to these, sometimes radically altering several elements of the initial research project..In closing, this report includes reflections on the skills acquired in the course of the internship. The results of this study, currently being prepared, will be published in 2022.
