This study presents the analysis of the determinants of the trade credit granted and received by a panel of 3.567 manufacturing sectors’ SMEs in Portugal during the period 2010-2018. The results are consistent with economic theory reviewed. Larger companies, with greater reputation and with more financing instruments available, grant more trade credit to their customers and, on the other hand, depend less on the credit from their suppliers. The same pattern applies to firms with greater ability to generate internal resources. Companies that show higher growth in their turnover grant less credit to their customers, however, when they face a declining turnover, firms react by becoming more flexible and offering more trade credit to their customers, used to stimulate sales to stem the fall in their level of operations, using trade credit as a marketing mechanism and acting as a price discrimination mechanism. A similar situation occurs when firms face negative gross margins, leading to an increase in trade credit granted to customers, with the same purpose of gearing up sales. Regarding the relationship between bank credit and trade credit, they appear to be complementary, as firms does not reduce their utilization of supplier credit along with a greater use of bank credit, potentially because they have already exhausted the available credit lines credit at their disposal. Thus, so it was possible to identify a trade credit substitution effect when alternative sources of financing are available (external or internally generated).
