Tipografia na Baixa Visão

Abstract

A acuidade visual nos indivíduos com baixa visão não é, na maioria dos casos, aproveitada na sua totalidade, mas poderia ser utilizada e melhorada através de medidas adequadas. Muitas vezes, estes indivíduos são equiparados e abordados da mesma forma como daqueles que padecem de cegueira. Deste modo é necessário esclarecer o conceito de acuidade visual, se o nosso grau de visão não corresponde às nossas necessidades, estamos perante uma divergência, a qual denominamos de baixa acuidade visual. Esta é a deficiência com maior incidência em Portugal, chegando mesmo a ultrapassar a deficiência motora segundo a fonte Centro Especializado em Baixa Visão. O principal objetivo deste trabalho de investigação é compreender o papel da tipografia e como esta pode interferir nos resultados de testes visuais para indivíduos que sofram deste tipo de patologia, a baixa visão. Neste sentido serão apontados elementos tipográficos que se devem ter em conta quando direcionamos um estudo sobre o processo de leitura a pacientes com necessidades visuais. Devido à ausência de designers na comunidade científica que desenvolve estes testes de leitura, como demonstra Tinkel no artigo Taking it in - What makes type easy to read – and why?, esta investigação tem como fundamento abordar a importância dessa privação, pois o conhecimento que um designer possui vai de encontro à principal ferramenta aplicada nestes testes, a tipografia. Na tentativa de compreender como se tem desenvolvido alguns testes de leitura, aplicamos a metodologia experimental, que segundo Carlos Fontes analisa o conhecimento do comportamento humano em situações reais. As ferramentas de investigação utilizadas foram a recolha de dados bibliográficos e ainda a realização de entrevistas.

The visual acuity on patients with low vision, it isn’t on most cases, exploited in their entirety, but could be used and improved by suitable measures. Many times, these patients are treated and approached as those who suffering from blindness. So it’s necessary to clarify the visual acuity concept, if our degree of vision doesn’t correspond to our needs, we are facing to a divergence, which we call low visual acuity. This is the disability, with higher incidence in Portugal, even to overcome physical disabilities according to the source Centro Especializado em Baixa Visão. The main purpose of this research is understand the role of typography, and how it can interfere with the visual test results for patients who suffering from this type of pathology, low vision. So will be indicated typographical elements that should be taken into account when we direct a study on the reading process for patients with visual needs. Due to lack of the designers in the scientific community that develops these reading tests, as demonstrated by Tinkel, on the article Taking it in - What makes type easy to read & and why?, this research is based on approach the importance of such deprivation, because the knowledge that a designer has, come upon the main tool applied on these tests, the typography. In an attempt to understand how they have developed some reading tests, we apply the experimental methodology, which according to Carlos Fontes analyzes the knowledge of human behavior in real situations. The research tools that I used were: the collect bibliographic data and also conducting interviews.
