Species monitoring is an important tool for detecting changes in ecosystems. Extreme weather events have been increasing in frequency and intensity in recent decades. The creation of long-term databases allows us to understand how they are responding to these climatic variations. The objectives of this study were to describe the population dynamics of the brown shrimp Crangon crangon in the Mondego estuary in terms of temporal and spatial variation, and the effects of climate variability and extreme weather events (droughts and floods) on this population. C. crangon is a key species in this ecosystem being an important prey for fish species of commercial interest, as well as an important predator of other benthic invertebrates. Samplings were carried out monthly from 2003 to 2015, at night using a 2-meter beam trawl. C. crangon densities were standardized in individuals per 1000 m2.By analyzing the intra-annual distribution of C. crangon, it was possible to characterize its life cycle in the Mondego estuary. Females and males move into the estuary in spring, and in winter migrate back to the sea. Juveniles, on the other hand, start appearing inside the estuary at the beginning of spring, occurring almost continuously until November. By analyzing the inter-annual variation, it was possible to understand how the species varied over the years studied. The RDA analysis allowed differentiating the spatial and temporal distribution of juveniles and males over the years characterized by drought, flood and regular periods. Through the analysis of cumulative sums (CUSUM) a correlation was found between juveniles and most environmental variables and weather patterns such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the East Atlantic Pattern (EAP). Females show correlation only with flow rate and salinity. Males revealed no correlation with the environmental variables used. The occurrence of extreme climatic events leads to changes in the population dynamics of C. crangon. Our results show that this species benefits from flood periods, when salinity is lower and river flow is higher, leading to greater recruitment of juveniles and increased population density in the Mondego estuary
