In compliance with the European Directives and in order to achieve the targets proposed by the European Council, the sectors of industry and construction have to contribute to the aim of the European Union of reaching a neutral climate impact by 2050.In this sense, it is of utmost importance the development of passive solutions when constructing new buildings. At the same time, the concomitant use of materials with low carbon emissions throughout their life cycle, will allow for increasingly sustainable buildings, both from the viewpoint of energy and environment. The development of these solutions, aligned with the evolution of vernacular architecture and modular systems in metallic structures, contributes positively to the reinforcement of this new concept of passive buildings in Portugal. To this aim, this work is supported by numerical simulations made by the software DesignBuilder (energy analysis program) and seeks to understand the influence of climate on the definition of passive solutions, reducing the energy needs of HVAC systems, and to infer the influence of location on the structural design of the buildings (through a structural analysis using the Robot Structural Analysis Professional 2018 program).Analyses were carried out on two buildings in Portugal in different locations, Coimbra and Faro, in order to understand the structural behaviour of a building with different structural requirements (e.g. load actions) and the energy efficiency of passive solutions in each of the predominant climatic regions in national territory. In this study, the role of passive solutions, namely shading devices and protection of glass openings, in reducing the maximum temperature observed inside buildings during the summer was understood. Together with the use of air conditioning systems, it is possible to conclude that the use of this type of solutions allows a comfortable interior temperature within an acceptable range and a reduction in energy costs with cooling and heating systems.
