Abstract: The Internet is an increasingly used tool both nationally and globally. Its excessive use has been reported in all ages, social strata and levels of education, therefore Internet addition is a problem that has been worrying the scientific community. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT) measures the presence and severity of Internet dependency amongst adults. Although there is already a study that validate the IAT in our country, the pre-sent one aims to explore and confirm the factor structure, its reliability and validity, in a sam-ple of Portuguese university students belonging to the medicine course. The sample consisted of 455 young adults (64.4% female), with an average age of 24.48 ± 3.40, who answered the Portuguese version of the IAT, demographic questions and the daily use of screens. For the study of temporal stability, 68 (67.6% female) individuals answered the questionnaires a second time, approximately, after 4 weeks.ResultsThe exploratory analysis revealed a two-factor solution: Salience and Reactivity (α = .89) and Functional Loss (α = .87). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a good fit of the data [χ2 (148) = 307,303, p <.001; χ2 / gl = 2,076; CFI = 0.920; TLI = 0.907; RMSEA = 0.068 (IC = 0.057 - 0.079), p = 0.003]. Pearson’s correlation between the test and the re-test was .82. The two factors of the IAT also revealed to be positively correlated with the use of game console, computer or tablet and mobile phone. The results suggest that the IAT is a reliable and valid instrument to measure Internet addic-tion in Portuguese University Students of Medicine.
