In the scope of structural design, the analysis and design of reinforced concrete shallow foundations (footings) should probably be based on methods based on strut and tie models. In fact, having in view the geometry and loading types of these structural elements, they must be classified as D-zones (discontinuity zones), i.e. regions for which the assumption of plane distributions of deformations is completely inappropriate. The strong development observed in the last 30 years in terms of the theory and methods associated to strut and tie models, which lead to their growing influence in reinforced concrete structural codes all over the world, can be explained by the combination of the method simplicity, the realism of the underlying hypotheses and the quality of the ensuing results. However, for shallow foundations, particularly for isolated footings, the usual 2D strut and tie models are inappropriate because of the intrinsically 3D nature of the stress fields and strength mechanism in these elements. Therefore, in this thesis, spatial models resulting from the generalization of the trapezoidal plane model for partial discontinuity regions are used; these are simple to establish and analyse. This generalization is mostly that established by a Spanish structural design team in Fib Bulletin 61 [6]. The thesis exemplifies the application of the model to different typologies of foundations, in order to illustrate the versatility of the model as well as the simplicity of the method application. However, it should be stressed that the definition of the geometry of the nodal zones and the verification of their safety still require both fundamental and laboratorial studies. The predesign of the presented examples is based on the verification of the allowable bearing capacity of the soil; hence, the footing dimensions may in some of the cases not be the optimal, but this topic lays outside the scope of the thesis.pt
