The design and excavation of building basements in urban environment is commonly of increased complexity, mostly due to the fact that beyond the specifics required by the project itself, it becomes necessary to take into account all existing local constraints. These impose restrictions on the design and strongly constrain the constructive solutions already adopted particularly when located on the periphery of other buildings or infrastructures. The use of traditional methods of retaining support structures is limited both by the dimensions of the building in case of props, and, above all, the inability to use anchors as these may interfere with existing conditions. In these cases, it becomes necessary to adopt innovative construction solutions with top-down being one of the most frequently used methods, in which the slabs of the building itself support land pressures applied in the peripheral containment structure. Therefore, this method involves the following steps: a) Installation of the curtain wall; b) construction of the ground floor slab; c) excavation of the first level by means of an opening purposely left in the slab; d) construction of the slab on the first basement; e) new excavation to the next level until reaching the desired number of basements. This work deals with the issue of digging basements in urban environment. This dissertation starts with a literature review in which the various construction methods are presented and analysed, giving particular emphasis to the top-down method. In a second phase the case study is presented. It consists of the construction of the Platinum Tower containment structure in Maputo, Mozambique, in which the top-down methodology was used. Apart from the description of the work, which includes the presentation of the results of existing monitoring practices, a numerical modelling and the corresponding retro-analysis of the excavation is performed, through two-dimensional finite element numerical techniques. In addition to the modelling of the construction phasing adopted, other possible solutions aiming to comparatively evaluate the benefit of the chosen solution will also be simulated. The obtained results show that a solution using an anchored wall would be effective if it could be applied without any constrains. The solution using props is not viable in this case due to the dimensions of the excavation.
