Para além da habitação: A emergência do espaço-entre na arquitetura habitacional do século XX

Abstract

Incited by the interest in understanding what truly connects architecture and the human and territorial component, the present dissertation has as main objective to study the space-between, from its emergence and development, as an element that promotes happiness and spatial continuity. It should be noted that the interest of architects on this topic arose throughout the 20th century, between the great wars and after the second world war. Starting from this temporal space, we studied the thematic, as architects from various European contexts, in an attempt to renew the conservative architecture propagated by the dictatorial regimes, found in the space-between the margin to create an hybrid between modernity and nationalism. At the first moment, we developed a historical review that transports us to Italy, a geographical space that incorporates the first meetings and experiences of the space-between as an architectural theme. Then, we try to understand its consolidation as a crucial theme for the renovation of modern architecture. Subsequently, we traveled to Portugal, where we studied how portuguese architects who, influenced by international experiences, worked under the regime of António Oliveira Salazar. In a second moment, we start from the reflection of the space-between as an element of ambiguous interpretation and compositional variety for its analysis in various housing programs. The economic rent houses in Barcelos, by Nuno Teotónio Pereira and the single-family houses in Restelo and Cascais, by Alberto José Pessoa and Ruy Jervis d’Athouguia, respectively, make up this analysis. Finally, the conclusions to be drawn from the study developed results in the confrontation of the different languages and solutions obtained by these architects, in order to understand how this theme establishes different degrees of intimacy and responds, in each case, to the basic needs and transversal to all of them.

Incitada pelo interesse em entender o que verdadeiramente une a arquitetura e a componente humana e territorial, a presente dissertação tem como principal objetivo estudar o espaço-entre, a partir do seu surgimento e desenvolvimento, enquanto elemento promotor de felicidade e continuidade espacial. De salientar que o despertar do interesse de arquitetos sobre este tema surge ao longo do século XX, entre as grandes guerras e após a segunda guerra mundial. Partindo deste espaço temporal, estudamos a temática, como arquitetos de vários contextos europeus, na tentativa de renovar a arquitetura conservadorista propagada pelos regimes ditatoriais, encontraram no espaço-entre a margem para criar um híbrido entre a modernidade e o nacionalismo. Num primeiro momento desenvolvemos uma resenha histórica que nos transporta até Itália, espaço geográfico que, por sua vez, incorpora os primeiros encontros e experiências do espaço-entre enquanto tema arquitetónico. De seguida, procuramos entender a sua consolidação enquanto tema crucial para a renovação da arquitetura moderna. Posteriormente, viajamos até Portugal, onde estudamos como arquitetos portugueses que, influenciados pelas experiências internacionais, o trabalharam ainda sob o regime de António Oliveira Salazar. Num segundo momento, partimos da reflexão do espaço-entre enquanto elemento de interpretação ambígua e variedade compositiva para a sua análise em vários programas de habitação. As casas de renda económica em Barcelos, de Nuno Teotónio Pereira e as vivendas unifamiliares no Restelo e em Cascais, de Alberto José Pessoa e Ruy Jervis d’Athouguia, respetivamente, compõem esta análise. Por fim, as ilações a retirar do estudo desenvolvido resultam no confronto das diferentes linguagens e soluções obtidas por estes arquitetos, de maneira a entender como é que este tema estabelece diferentes graus de intimidade e responde, em cada um dos casos, às necessidades básicas e transversais a todos eles.
