Teatro Sousa Bastos - Espaço Performativo e Cultural

Abstract

A presente dissertação procura, em traços gerais, investigar e refletir sobre a importância e valor do património construído. Parte de um caso específico, o Teatro Sousa Bastos, exemplificativo de edifícios social e culturalmente importantes para o meio em que estão inseridos e que hoje caíram em desuso.Inicia-se, em primeiro lugar, uma investigação sobre o passado do edifício no sentido de compreender as relações que este tinha com o meio urbano envolvente e a importância na cidade, fazendo uma análise da sua evolução ao longo dos anos, percebendo o percurso até às suas condições atuais. Nesta procura evidenciam-se valores de memória coletiva que podem justificar a validade da intervenção proposta.Tomando dois casos de estudo, que se apresentam pelas semelhanças históricas, patrimoniais, contextuais e tipológicas, analisam-se as suas particularidades e envolvências (culturais e urbanas) que se apontam como perspetivas para uma resposta semelhante. São projetos que ganham destaque não só pela recuperação, mas sobretudo pela revitalização bem sucedida destes equipamentos.No final apresenta-se uma proposta para a reabilitação do edifício em estudo que, apesar das várias vontades de reanimação, tem caído no abandono e está bastante degradado. Com esta proposta pretende- se concretizar a validade de preservação do património construído, quando representa objetos de importância social e cultural, expondo a relevância de proteger as vivências da cidade e a potencialidade de ter estes locais como meios dinamizadores e reativadores dos centros históricos.

This thesis tries, in general, to inquire and reflect about the importance and value of built heritage. It uses a specific case study, Sousa Bastos Theater, in Coimbra, which is an example of an important cultural building for an urban area where it is inserted in and which that today is abandoned.First of all, an investigation was made about the building’s past in a way to understand the relations with the surrounding urban environment and the importance of this building in the city context, analyzing its evolution over the years and understanding its transformation until the actual conditions. In this research, the collective memory values that can justify the importance of the proposed intervention become evident.Using two case studies, that have historical, contextual and typological similarities, we analyzed the particularities and the urban and cultural environments that frame a similar type of answer. Those are projects that deserve attention not only because of the subject of rehabilitation, but mainly because of the well-succeed revitalization of these facilities.In the end we present a proposal for the rehabilitation of the Sousa Bastos Theater building which, despite multiple renovation attempts over the years, has been forgotten and is now abandoned. With this project, we fulfill an ideia of historial heritage preservation, through and architectural object of social and cultural importance, exposing the relevance of protecting urban landscapes through their historical buildings and the potential these have to become dynamizers and reactivators of historical centers.
