O inconsciente colonial

Abstract

É um lugar-comum dizer-se que a produção de memória arrasta consigo, inevitável e concomitantemente, a produção de esquecimento. Há muitas formas de esquecimento, a mais insidiosa das quais é, sem dúvida, a rasura da memória, a reescrita do passado como parte de uma estratégia deliberada de intervenção no presente. A forma mais extrema dessa rasura é o negacionismo ou o revisionismo, por exemplo, a negação do Holocausto, que, por bons motivos, a legislação de vários países remete para a esfera criminal. Há, no entanto, outras formas de esquecimento, muito mais inocentes, mas cujas consequências são, por igual, profundamente negativas, uma vez que nos privam de instrumentos de justiça e moldam o nosso presente de forma empobrecedora e excludente. Uma dessas formas, de manifesta actualidade no actual debate público português, é determinada por aquilo a que chamo o inconsciente colonial.

It is a commonplace to say that the production of memory inevitably and concomitantly carries with it the production of forgetfulness. There are many forms of forgetfulness, the most insidious of which is undoubtedly the erasure of memory, the rewriting of the past as part of a deliberate strategy of intervention in the present. The most extreme form of this erasure is negationism or revisionism, for example, the denial of the Holocaust, which, for good reasons, the legislation of various countries refers to the criminal sphere. There are, however, other forms of forgetfulness, much more innocent, but whose consequences are equally profoundly negative, since they deprive us of instruments of justice and shape our present in an impoverishing and exclusionary way. One of these forms, of manifest actuality in the current Portuguese public debate, is determined by what I call the colonial unconscious
