Abstract The present thesis in Classical Studies, part of The Ancient World, for the most part in didactics, has a theoretical-empirical character and focuses on issues related to the presence and teaching of Latin in the educational Portuguese system. The guideline of this dissertation starts from the verification of the devaluation situation that the Latin subject has been exposed to in recent years in Portugal. Reflecting on the past and the present, it intends to introduce work guidelines to Latin teachers, as well as regenerate Latin subject in secondary education. Overall, at a theoretical level, we started from the analysis of legislation related to secondary education in Portugal, and addressing, in a more accurate way, the Humanities area and Latin subject. Recommendations and opinions from the National Council of Education (CNE) and the analysis of all the curricular documents of the Latin subject available on the webpage of the General Executive board of Education (DGE) were also included. Based on the readings carried out, we focused our reflection on the evolution of the subject under study, its presence in the syllabus and the changes verified in the syllabus’ documents regarding to content and methodologies. We also considered the syllabus, according to Zabalza's perspective. We have systematised the contributions which the Latin subject can bring to the learning of languages and literature and highlighted the benefits of this subject in terms of cultural references. At the end of the theoretical section, we focused on questions related to didactics, in order to establish a connection between older theories and recent theories. We analysed different views related to language teaching, with particular emphasis on the process of teaching and learning the Latin language. In this chapter we have developed some guidelines, in didactic terms, regarding to content and methodologies. We presented concrete suggestions that might collaborate in the teaching practice of the subject under analysis. From the empirical point of view, we aimed to answer the question that encouraged our work - the situation of Latin subject in secondary education in Portugal. For this purpose, we outlined specific aims that would allow us to investigate the importance that each participant in the developed study (students, teachers, and school principals) gave to the subject, the reasons that lead to the effective option for the Latin subject, the contents and methodologies implemented and the advantages that learning Latin can offer. While carrying out the investigation, we built a questionnaire, divided into three versions, addressed to the main participants: students, teachers, and school principals. Within the obtained results, we reached conclusions that we consider having great significance and which we hope will form the basis for collaboration, both in curricular ways (syllabus’ documents) as well as in terms of teaching practice (textbooks and auxiliary textbooks).
