In the middle of the XVIII century, the continuous tension between the Portuguese andthe Spanish colonies in South America, lead up to the signature of the Treaty of Madrid betweenthe two Empires, in 1750. The treaty established that the territory of tension in the Amazonbelonged to the one that showed ownership. This way, a fast founding policy settled betweenthe two entities, with the foundation of cities on both sides of a boarder that was still to be established. This led up to a tendency to “fi ll the gaps” of the American Continent, which meant, occupy the areas that were not yet colonized , specifi cally the Amazon forest, being the GuaporéRiver, case study of this dissertation, agreed between these two crowns as a border. The Portuguese moved through the rivers from the Atlantic to the heart of the American continent, until the east bank of the Guaporé river, where they built cities. Although, there, along the western part of Bolivia, they found multiple missionary settlements, founded by theJesuits with the indigenous tribes of Mojo and Chiquitos, partnered with Spain. Through thesemissions the Spanish showed their presence in this territory, in exchange of letting the Jesuitsuse it for the missions. Through a analysis process of the territory planning on both sides of the Guaporé river, and an urban morphology study of the cities of Jesuit, Spanish and Portuguese settlements in theAmazon, this dissertation tries to understand what is a “boarder” and what contructs it, from theurbanism point of view, throughout the study of the urban experiences of this colonial entitiesthat occupied this area in the XVIII century and contributed to de defi nition of the line that stilltoday shapes the border between Brazil and Bolivia.
