The aim of this thesis is to study the government of the “Estado da Índia” by D. João de Castro (governor and viceroy between 1545 and 1548). This took place during a period of political and military tension, at the time of the the war against the sultanate of Gujarat (with its peak in the siege of the Portuguese fortress of Diu, in 1546) and Bijapur, and the reinforcement of the policy and strategy of king D. João III. This government was marked by the military campaigns and the image of power that Castro himself enforced. Thus, with this research we’ve tried to understand the role of the government of D. João de Castro in the construction of the “Estado da Índia” and the Portuguese presence in Asia. At the same time, it aims to revisit the historiography about this figure of the Portuguese expansion and to understand the processes by which he was mythified, allowing a critical and objective vision of his government. For this purpose, the study is organized in four parts, from a broad eye view of the history of “Estado da Índia” to an analytical study of the government of D. João de Castro. The first part reassesses what we knows about the Portuguese presence in Asia during the first half of the 16th century, highlighting the principals trends in the formation of the “Estado da Índia” as the setting in which the government in study is focused. The second part, engages in a more narrative approach, following the personal background and career of D. João de Castro, in light of his cursus honorum before being nominated as governor of the “Estado da Índia” in 1545. Here, his government is analysed chronologically. The third and fourth parts are the core of the critical and historiographical evaluation of this government. In a first moment it leans on warfare organization and administration, aiming to reconstruct and understand the process by which D. João de Castro could logistically sustain his campaigns, evaluating the human, material and financial means. After this, we examine the political and symbolic impact of this government. It focuses on the building of a court in Goa, trying to understand the governmental practices, the reinforcement of the networks of the Governor and the construction of an imperial image of the “Estado da Índia”. All these elements aimed to centralize and strengthen the real and symbolic power of the king through his higher official in Asia. At last, we analyse the ways in which the memory of this governor and his government were created and lasted in the Portuguese collective memory. It can be explained as part of the chronicles of this period and some memorialist projects led by his grandchildren who tried to use the figure of D. João de Castro to enhance their own achievements. More than just an historiographical revisionism, this thesis seeks to contribute to the understanding of the formation of the “Estado da Índia” and the Portuguese Maritime Empire in the 16th century. The government of D. João de Castro is then understood as part of the strategy of king D. João III to organize a vast imperial space in which the “Estado da Índia” was recognized as a key component understandable in the Empire as a whole.
