Olhar, sentir, compreender: Teoria da Mente, Empatia e Resiliência

Abstract

A Teoria da Mente, a Empatia e a Resiliência têm sido construtos estudados em várias investigações, não só pela importância que detêm no funcionamento do indivíduo como pelo papel ativamente presente na interação social e na vida quotidiana. O seu estudo tem abordado diversas áreas do desenvolvimento e diversos campos de interesse, desde o campo neurológico ao estudo da inteligência emocional, em amostras clínicas e da população geral. A presente investigação pretende estudar a relação entre estas três variáveis numa amostra da população geral, constituída por 157 sujeitos (117 do sexo feminino e 40 do sexo masculino), de idade igual ou superior aos 18 anos. O protocolo inclui as seguintes escalas de autorresposta: Reading the Mind with the Eyes test – Revised (RMET), Empathy Quocient – Short version (EQ) e Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Os resultados da presente investigação mostram uma relação significativa entre as três variáveis, bem como uma relação preditora entre a Teoria da Mente e a Empatia, ainda que com pouca explicação da variância. A Resiliência mostrou não ser uma variável preditora, e os resultados apresentaram, no geral, pouco poder explicativo. As variáveis sexo, idade, escolaridade e rendimento foram também estudadas em relação aos três construtos principais, apresentado resultados semelhantes à tendência desta investigação, pelo que são necessárias investigações futuras mais aprofundadas quanto aos vários conceitos abordados no presente estudo.

Theory of Mind, Empathy and Resilience have been subjects of interest for a long time, not only due to their importance in the individual functioning but also due to their active role in social interaction and daily life. They have been investigated in the most diverse areas, from neurobiology to the emotional intelligence field, in both general population and clinical samples. This investigation aims to explore these three variables in a general population sample, with a research protocol entailing the RMET (Reading the Mind with the Eyes test – Revised), the EQ (Empathy Quocient – Short version) and the CD-RISC (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale), and evaluating 157 subjects (117 female and 40 male) with an age equal or superior to 18 years old. The results obtained showed a significant correlation between the three concepts, as well as a predictive relation between Theory of Mind and Empathy, even though they explain very little of the sample variance in general. With regards to Resilience, this concept presented itself as a non predictive variable, and the results were weak in explaining the inicial hypothesis proposed here in this investigation. In addition, the variables sex, education and income were investigated in relation to the three main constructs proposed, ending up showing similar results to the overall tendency of the general study, so further and more deep investigations seem necessary on these matters aiming to obtain better results regarding these constructs.
