The following report is the result of the curricular internship under the Master in Sociology, carried out at the Portuguese Victim Support Association (APAV), at the office located in Coimbra. The mission of the Portuguese Victim Support Association, being a private institution of social solidarity, non-profit, is intended to support victims of crime as well as their families and friends through confidential, free and quality services. Despite daily contact with several types of crimes and their specificities, I chose and focused, right away, on the violence that occurred in intimate relationships against women – the most referenced crime in the association – considered essential, the approach to (unequal) gender issues. In addition to the great impact of violence on intimate relationships for the victims, studies have been exposing the occurrence of a second victimization. Secondary victimization or revictimization can occur in different ways, in different instances, emphasizing the suffering and helplessness of women. In parallel with the tasks performed at APAV, I did an investigation, seeking to identify, reflect and sociologically problematize the phenomenon of secondary victimization against women, who remain or have remained in an intimate relationship. Therefore, I try to expose the criticisms pointed out by women and their experiences in contact with the several services and institutions. The methodological strategies used are the support processes for the victim of the host entity and semi-structured interviews, made to women who, at some stage of their path, they turned to APAV.Finally, and above all, this work reflects the stories and journeys of women who seek a tiny light in the darkness.
