Abstract: Um cemitério é uma cidade.
A cemetery is a city. It is an authentic historical archive, like an open book that provides material worthy of exploration and investigation in various areas of knowledge at various scales, free of charge. In addition, it is also a laboratory. In its dimension as a sanitary measure between the 18th and 19th centuries, the practices adopted in its development consist, in itself, a vast array of experiments. What led to the emergence of cemeteries as we know them today, and how did this urban model disseminate throughout the 19th century? Let us address the ancient necropolis as the nucleus and genome of modern cities as we know them today, in order to capture the origin of the cemetery as a city. From the establishment of the ancient necropolis to that of modern cemeteries, what end was given to dead bodies, and what kind of urban equipment was used? What correlations exist between the city of the living and the city of the dead? What is the importance of Architecture in the subject? This dissertation intends to answer these questions using two geographically and culturally distinct case studies: an English case, the sylvan Victorian cemetery of Abney Park; and a Portuguese case where the construction of funerary monuments dominates the cemetery-scape, the Conchada Cemetery in Coimbra. Taking these cases not only as examples, but as objects of particular interest to this study for possessing something unique to each one of them, we will describe the processes that led to their establishment and the ways in which each one cohabits with the respective metropolis. Amidst this investigation, several other questions arose, such as the extremely pronounced differences between two solutions to a common problem (a health crisis resulting from medieval practices of disposing of the dead until the 19th century), the role performed by the agents involved in their creation, and the way that Père-Lachaise – the pioneer of the European modern cemeteries – reflects itelf in these and other cases. Finally, this work aims to establish relations between cemetery and city, and vice versa, as well as to emphasize the role of the architect in the design of the modern cemetery.
