The difficulty in teaching/learning graphic accentuation in European Portuguese (EP) motivated its choice as the object of study for the present Report and as a main intervention domain for the Pedagogical Internship - integrated in the Programme of Initiation to Professional Practice of the Master’s Degree in Portuguese as a Foreign Language and Second Language (PLELS) at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra. The study of the subject has involved: (i) the distinction of the prosodic phenomena of accentuation and the orthographic conventions of the accent and the presentation of fundamental concepts for their description; (ii) the analysis of the treatment given to accentuation in guideline documents used in teaching foreign languages (and Portuguese) and in manuals and grammars to non-native Portuguese speakers; (iii) the description of difficulties in the learning of graphic accentuation by learners of Portuguese as a non-native language (PNN), identified in a number of studies; (iv) the description and explanation of the activities relevant to the teaching of graphic accentuation, with the presentation of some results obtained in that context.Although limited in number, the data obtained allow to verify that: (i) in a context of explicit teaching, the students do not show great difficulty in the identification of the tonic syllable and the use of the diacritical sign in common words; (ii) in a context of implicit teaching, a trend arises in the occurrence of deviations by omission of the diacritic.
