This work aims to study numerical methods with stabilization for a convection-diffusion equation, both in the stationary and non-stationary cases, with application to oil spills. In the stationary case, we will deduct the weak formulation and prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution. Next, the Galerkin method with sectional polynomial finite elements will be introduced to obtain an approximate solution, and its stability and convergence will be studied.Later, even in the stationary case, it will be shown by means of examples, a difficulty that occurs in the numerical solution, in the case that the convection dominates the behavior of the equation. The Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method will then be defined and its stability and convergence will be studied, as a stabilizer of the numerical solution of the Galerkin method. In the non-stationary case, the new variational formulation and the SUPG method will be duly adapted. To address the temporal component, the θ-method will be introduced. Various convergence and stability estimates will be studied for two particular cases of this method, namely the Implicit Euler method and the Crank-Nicolson method. Finally, an application of the described methods will be carried out, in the non-stationary case, to a real spill event of 64,000 liters of oil from the Prestige vessel, which occurred in 2002 in Galicia, northern Spain. Finally, an overlapping comparison will be made between the methods studied and the particle tracking method, which already exists in spill modeling. |
