Estudo sedimentológico de 2 sondagens executadas em 2019 na margem direita do Mondego (entre o Largo da Portagem e a ponte-açude de Coimbra): interpretação da evolução fluvial.

Abstract

O presente trabalho insere-se no âmbito de uma Prestação de Serviço efetuada pelo DCT-UC e tem como principal objetivo a caracterização e interpretação do registo sedimentar aluvionar da margem direita do rio Mondego, entre o açude-ponte de Coimbra e o Largo da Portagem, com base em duas sondagens com recolha de testemunho e ca. 15 m de comprimento, executadas em 2019. Este registo é ulteriormente articulado com o atravessado por sondagens mais antigas e dados históricos, para se proceder a um a interpretação e análise da evolução fluvial e dos principais controlos naturais e antrópicos. O trabalho foi dividido em 4 capítulos; (i) o primeiro contém a Introdução, com os objetivos do trabalho, um resumo histórico das intervenções realizadas no rio Mondego, a caracterização do clima, eustatismo e tectónica durante o Plistocénico e o Holocénico em Portugal central, e as metodologias utilizadas; (ii) o segundo capítulo, contém os resultados obtidos, consistindo na descrição detalhada das sondagens, análises granulométricas, e mineralógicas de amostras de areias e siltes/argilas, definição de fácies sedimentares e identificação de estruturas antrópicas; (iii) o terceiro capítulo compreende a discussão e interpretação dos dados, envolvendo a definição de perfis estratigráficos para ambas as sondagens, caracterizações paleoambientais, uma análise da influência dos controlos climáticos e antrópicos no assoreamento do rio e de riscos associados à ocupação das margens do rio; (iv) o quarto capitulo, é composto pelas conclusões.De entre as principais conclusões deste trabalho, destaque para: (i) a identificação de quatro fases principais de enchimento fluvial, cada uma delas com uma sequência granocrescente; (ii) a influência das intervenções humanas sobre o seu assoreamento. Alerta-se para a necessidade de medidas para a restauração ambiental do rio Mondego acautelando que o crescimento da cidade se faz em harmonia com o rio.

The present work is part of a Service Provision performed by the DCT-UC and its main objective is the characterization and interpretation of the alluvial sedimentary register of the right bank of the Mondego river, between the Coimbra bridge dam and Largo da Portagem, based on two core survey with sediment recovery and ca. 15 m in length, carried out in 2019. This record articulated with that datafrom older core surveys and historical data, for establishing river evolution and assessing the roles of major and anthropic controls.The work was divided into 4 chapters; (i) the first contains the introduction, with objectives of the work, a historical summary of the interventions carried out on the Mondego river, the characterization of climate, eustatism, and tectonics during the Pleistocene and Holocene in central Portugal, and the methodologies used; (ii) the second chapter contains the results obtained, consisting of a detailed description of the surveys, granulometric and mineralogical analyses of the sand and silt/clay samples, definition of sedimentary facies and identification of anthropic structures; (iii) the third chapter comprises the discussion and the interpretation of the data, involving the definition of the stratigraphic profiles for both surveys, paleoenvironmental characterizations, an analysis of the influence of the climate and anthropic controls on river silting and risks associated with the occupation of the river banks; the fourth chapter consists of the conclusions.Among the main conclusions of this work, we highlight: (i) the identification of four main river filling phases, each with fining-upward trends; (ii) the influence of the human interventions on their siltation. We warn of the need for measures for the environmental restoration of the Mondego river, ensuring that the city's growth is in harmony with the river
