Virtual Reality (VR) interaction is often achieved through standard controllers. However, considering new forms of input, may be advantageous, for example, in situations where standard controllers are not available or cannot be used, in situations where standard controllers are not best suited for interaction tasks, or simply to provide a different user experiences. In this project, is explored the use of tangible objects for interaction in VR environments, tracking the tangible objects using visual markers, typically used in Augmented Reality (AR). The prototyping in this project aims to create different experiences and forms of interaction in virtual environments, in order to explore and characterize a design space in which passive tangibles can benefit the interaction with a system. The prototyping and exploration of ideas in the design process, allowed to identify several characteristics in examples, and thus feed the design space with the use of tangibles in a virtual environment. Based on the characterize design space, a virtual book was developed, which allows the user to interact with the system through several tangible forms of interaction, and thus control the multimedia content presented in the virtual environment, through a realistic haptic experience for the user. The virtual book, physically works like a traditional book, but having on each page visual markers to track the position and rotation of the pages for the presentation of digital content in the virtual environment. With the possibility of using different themes with the same object, it allows greater versatility and scope for users who may be interested in using the product, with a recognizable and associative experience, even for those without VR experience.
