This PhD thesis addresses coastal dynamics, particularly coastal erosion, whose importance for researchers and government officials increased over the second half of the twentieth century, continuing in this century, hence the growing and more diverse interest (more scientific expertise) in the study from the coast. The west façade, where this study is inserted, has a high-energy maritime regime, with a high sedimentary transport along the coast, hence the importance of studying coastal dynamics and anthropic interventions leading to minimizing the damage checked on the coast. Besides the loss of national territory, the loss of property and even people is also at stake. To understand the phenomenon of the coast it is important to know the evolution of the coastline, in the past and the present, and the conditions of sedimentary supply in which this evolution took place. Equally relevant is the knowledge, as wide as possible over time, of the variables of the swell that most directly contribute to the phenomenon of shoreline alteration. This thesis, which was developed on the coast south of Cabo Mondego, between Buarcos and S. Pedro de Moel, addresses the concepts applied on the coast and the importance of the theme. Then it analyzes the geological and geomorphological framework of the area under study, as well as its climatic and hydrological characteristics. In a second phase, the historical alteration of the coastline was investigated (before and after the construction of the jetties at the mouth of the Mondego). Then, and at the heart of this work, the evolution of the coastline was followed after the extension of the north jetty at the mouth of the Mondego River and the state of the sea that contributed to this evolution was verified. Also and because the alteration of the coastline had a direct influence on the adjacent dune systems, namely on the foredune, a historical analysis of these dune systems and their evolution was carried out. The aeolian sedimentary movement, between the beach and the dune, was also the object of a quantitative study, as well as in which meteorological conditions (wind and rainfall) this movement took place. Finally, a summary and conclusions of the various chapters treated in this thesis are presented.
