Arquitetura e democracia: a Escola Paulista e seu legado arquitetônico enquanto forma de resistência

Abstract

Tensões políticas no Brasil foram recorrentes nesta última década e espaços famosos da cidade de São Paulo serviram como palcos de manifestações políticas e sociais. O vão livre do MASP e o salão caramelo da FAUUSP foram selecionados como casos de estudo desta dissertação, por serem lugares muito representativos para a cidade que demonstram um caráter democrático através de suas distintas maneiras de apropriação, apesar de terem sido concebidos em um passado repressivo de ditadura militar.O propósito desta dissertação está centrado em tentar perceber qual o papel do arquiteto enquanto agente de transformação social, principalmente no que concerne projetar ambientes que convidem à apropriação pública e que sejam espaços que promovam a liberdade e a igualdade, mesmo em regimes antidemocráticos.O presente trabalho está dividido em três capítulos, começando por apresentar os casos de estudo, o MASP e a FAUUSP, e as suas respectivas situações atuais, ou seja, que usos e apropriações acontecem nestes espaços hoje. O segundo capítulo está dedicado a uma abordagem dos rumos tomados pelo Movimento Moderno em sua manifestação arquitetônica no Brasil e, como a tendência brutalista foi exprimida na obra dos arquitetos na cidade de São Paulo. A partir disto, verificar as possíveis associações entre a arquitetura da Escola Paulista Brutalista e a manifestação do Brutalismo no Reino Unido, buscando perceber os vínculos com políticas democráticas em ambas situações. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo faz uma análise detalhada dos casos de estudo, desta vez, com a finalidade de entender seus contextos de formulação e projeto, o financiamento e patrocínio das obras, os históricos de suas envolventes urbanas, assim como os perfis de seus arquitetos idealizadores.

Political tensions in Brazil were recurrent over the last decade and famous spaces in the city of São Paulo served as stages for political and social manifestations. The vão livre of MASP and the salão caramelo of FAUUSP were selected as case studies for this dissertation as they are very representative places of the city that demonstrate a democratic character through their different ways of appropriation, despite having been conceived in a repressive past of military dictatorship.The purpose of this dissertation is centered on trying to understand what is the architect's role as an agent of social transformation, especially in what regards designing environments that invite public appropriation and spaces that promote freedom and equality, even in anti-democratic regimes.The present work is divided into three chapters, starting by presenting the case studies, MASP and FAUUSP, and their respective current situations, in other words, what uses and appropriations happen in these spaces today. The second chapter is dedicated to an approach of the directions taken by the Modern Movement in its architectural manifestation in Brazil and, how the brutalist tendency was expressed in the direction taken by the architects in the city of São Paulo. From this, verify the possible associations between the architecture of the Escola Paulista Brutalista and the manifestation of brutalism in the United Kingdom, trying to understand the links with democratic policies in both situations. Finally, the third chapter makes a detailed analysis of the case studies, this time, with the purpose of understanding their contexts of formulation and design, the financing and sponsorship of the works, the histories of their urban surroundings, as well as the profiles of their idealizing architects.
