Abstract: In recent years rapid economic development has been recorded on the African continent, although it has not yet fully translated into the human and infrastructural development of its inhabitants. The precarious conditions and extreme poverty, in which the populations of African countries live, especially in peri-urban and rural areas, are clear examples of this. After the presentation of projects carried out in African territories by architects and non-governmental organizations in the field of housing, health and education, together with participation in the Muhipiti Workshops: strategic planning, heritage and development held on the Island of Mozambique in July 2017, a cooperation between the University of Lurio and the University of Coimbra, has tried to understand how architecture can contribute to the socio-economic development of the most disadvantaged communities of these territories. Taking as a starting point the above mentioned elements, the present work intends to show, from the presented case studies, an intervention model that can serve as a basis for the architecture work in this context. With a recent process of decolonization in the 1960s and 1970s, Africa struggles for its socioeconomic stability as well as for its multicultural affirmation. Despite strong signs of economic growth1, most of the sub-Saharan countries are at the bottom of the table with respect to the Human Development Index (HDI), which clearly reveals wealth production but does not translate into quality of life of its inhabitants, a phenomenon that is observed explicitly in the periurban areas of the large cities in the form of Slums3 and in the decline of the rural environment that comes from the massive emigration of the population to the cities in search of better living conditions. The African continent has great potentialities in terms of natural and human resources4, supported by a rich cultural diversity. These factors can make a positive contribution to making Africa a global example in the field of sustainability.
