In building design, a fundamental part of the structure is the slab, an element which function is to resist to different actions according to the use of the building, and to distribute loads towards the other structural elements such as beams (if any) and columns.Slabs are characterized by having a reduced thickness when comparing to its others dimensions (width and length).Reinforced concrete slabs can have different configurations and characteristics, such as aesthetic and structural aspects. These differences can be distinguished by the materials used, design methods, and geometric characteristics. When it comes to geometric characteristics, one of the most important features is the thickness, playing a major role in the structural performance, with influence on bending, shear and punching shear resistance.Considering that the aesthetical part is not relevant, this work main goal is to study the best solutions that combine the best structural performance with the most economical solution. Two types of flat slabs are studied for current buildings; solid and waffle slabs of different dimensions in plan but with the same number of columns.Modelling and analysis was performed using the CYPECAD software under Eurocode guidelines, and the calculations for seismic actions were done in accordance to RSA (Regulamento de Segurança e Ações). The cost of each solution is derived from the materials cost (concrete, reinforcing steel and lightweight concrete modules) and is presented as a function of the span, slab thickness and type. These functions are graphically analysed using a spreadsheet programmed in EXCEL, aiming to find the most efficient solution for some of the spans dimensions used in the design of reinforced concrete buildings.
