Title: | Relevância da actividade física no contexto da demência cerebral | Authors: | Pereira, Bárbara | Orientador: | Santos, Armanda | Keywords: | Exercício; Demência; Disfunção cognitiva; Envelhecimento | Issue Date: | Sep-2015 | Place of publication or event: | Coimbra | Abstract: | O ser humano nasce, cresce, envelhece e morre, sendo o envelhecimento
intrínseco à vida e com ele ocorrem infinitas alterações no nosso organismo. O
The human being is born, grows, ages and dies. Aging is intrinsic to life and with it endless changes occur in the body. The cognitive decline is part of this aging and it may result in several neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia. Nevertheless, there are ways to delay the loss of cognitive functions, and one of them is through physical activity. Physical activity is capable of stimulating processes such as neurogenesis, angiogenesis and synaptogenesis that will slow the age-related cognitive decline. This delay can occur due to the fact that the expression of growth factors that have important roles in these processes, such as the Brain-derivated neurotrophic factor (BDNF), the Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) and the Vascular Endothelial Grotwh Factor (VEGF), is physical activity-dependent. Physical activity can also increase the levels of neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine and serotonin, which are involved in the regulation of synaptic plasticity, neuronal survival and repairing of damaged neurons. |
