Based on the general objective of showing the contribution of the osteological collections to the development of Anthropology, this study intends to carry out an anthropological characterization of a sample of the Collection of Unidentified Skeletons of the Capuchos Cemetery housed in the Life Sciences Department of the University of Coimbra, Portugal. This sample is composed by 34 adult individuals, with a weak state of preservation, most of them affected by tafonomic changes including postmortem fragmentation and chromatic alterations. Both sexes are represented in the same proportion, with 17 females and 17 males. As for the female individuals the age at death ranges from 21 to 92 years old (one younger adult, nine mature adults and seven elderlies) and eleven have a European ancestry. Regarding the male individuals, the age at death ranges from 23 to 92 years old (eleven mature adults and three elderlies) and 15 with a European ancestry.Since the evaluation of the biological profile is not enough to make a characterization of an individual, we analyzed the individualized characteristics as nonmetric and osteopathological characters. Most of the adult individuals present nonmetric characters, mainly at the level of the appendicular skeleton, being the notch of the scapula the most frequent. In the parameter of the osteopathology it was observed that a great part of the individuals of the sample have degenerative articular and non-articular alterations and, specifically at the level of the traumatic pathology, the most frequent lesion affects the ribs. There are also medical devices associated with about half of the individuals, from dental prostheses to orthopedic devices, two of them with a serial number, a valuable tool for the identification process. There is also a non-adult individual, but due to its poor preservation, it was only possible to estimate that his age at death, using dental methods, will be less than 21 years. Finally, this sample also has an ossuary and it is estimated that there will be at least five adult individuals, through the anatomical repetition of the left talus, and a non-adult individual.Despite being an unidentified collection, is still a good tool for the teaching of anthropology and development of methods in Forensic Anthropology, especially in burned bones and taphonomy, as showed by the studies carried out to date. It is hoped that the work done will be the first step in trying to identify the individuals in this collection, which would undoubtedly increase its potential.
