«Máquina de Ouver» — Representação do Discurso Oral pela Tipografia

Abstract

A tipografia é considerada por diversos autores a representação visual da linguagem e, através da escrita, o ser humano encontrou uma forma de registar e partilhar informação. Ao longo da história da tipografia, muitos foram os autores que exploraram a ligação entre a palavra e a sua sonoridade, tentando aproximar o que é dito do que se ouve e de como se lê. Apresentamos a «Máquina de Ouver», um sistema que analisa gravações de discurso e cria uma representação visual para a sua expressividade, com recurso à composição e variáveis tipográficas. Este sistema tira proveito das possibilidades de scripting do Praat, Adobe InDesign e Adobe After Effects para recolher dados sobre as características sonoras de gravações de discurso e, dinamicamente, criar uma composição tipográfica que resulta num artefacto estático ou dinâmico, como um poster ou vídeo. Sendo uma das formas de discurso mais dinâmicas e ricas em termos de expressividade, o material de experimentação foca-se, principalmente, em interpretações de poesia.

Typography is considered by many authors to be the visual representation of language and, through writing, the human being has found a way to record and share information. Throughout the history of typography, many authors have explored the link between the word and its sound, trying to approximate what is said with what one hears and how one reads. We present the «Máquina de Ouver», a system that analyzes speech recordings and creates a visual representation for their expressiveness, using composition and typographic variables. This system takes advantage of the scripting capabilities of Praat, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe After Effects to gather data on the sound features of speech recordings and dynamically create a typographic composition that results in a static or dynamic artifact, such as a poster or video. As one of the most dynamic and richly expressive forms of speech, experimentation material focuses mainly on interpretations of poetry.
