The deployment of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) enable us to assess the quality of the energy in a given area. These devices allow us to anticipate future failures by measuring phasors of voltage and current in key points, as well as knowing if there are any injection of harmful harmonics in the network, that may contribute to the degradation of the system as well as the quality of service. In this dissertation, we begin our presentation by briefly explaining the context of the problem of the optimization of PMU location and communication infrastructure, as well as a few relevant factors that will influence the end solution obtained by approximation of the objective function. Next, we describe a selection of optimization models that have been proposed in the literature, identifying the decisions variables, the objective function(s) and the sets of constraints. In this model it is considered the existence of Zero Injection Buses (ZIBs), as well as redundancy (N-1) in the observability of critical buses. With the goal of protecting the communication infrastructure against failures and/or natural disasters, we use models that minimize the number of Shared Risk Link Groups (SRLGs) in a link-disjoint path pair of a PMU to a pair of Phasor Data Concentrators (PDCs). Moreover, results of our experiments acquired with the solver binary integer linear programming CPLEX, show the transformations of the results by using different models. By penalizing the placement of PMUs in nodes that will result in path pairs with one or more SLRGs in common, it is possible to improve the resilience of our communication infrastructure. This approach will be tested in this work. Finally, the conclusions of our work, and some clues for future work improvements, will be presented.
