Resumo: The aim of this study is to analyse the influence of informative insider transactions on the evolution of prices, in the European Union market. More specifically, the study considers a sample constituted by the stocks of the market indices of members from six representative countries, observed from January 1998 to December 2017. The methodology used allows us to analyse if the insiders’ transactions contain information on future price changes. The companies’ size, the book-to-market ratio, and past returns are used to avoid the future returns bias as control variables. The variables used as proxies, to measure the informational content of the insider transactions are: the net purchase ratio (NPR) and the relative insider position indicator (VRPI). The NPR is a variable frequently used in the empirical literature while the VRPI is a new variable advanced by the author, taking into account the data’s characteristics. In order to analyse the relationship between the companies’ characteristics and the future returns, the initial sample is divided into six subgroups according to the value of the book-to-market ratio and the company’s size. The model is estimated for the total sample, and respective subsamples, considering the returns at time t + 1, and later the returns at time t, as dependent variables. The results suggest that the coefficients of measures of the insider transactions are, in most cases, statistically insignificant. In cases where NPR and VRPI coefficients are significant, their signal is negative. One of the possible justifications is that, when using annual data, it is not possible to capture a relationship between these variables and with the future returns. Therefore, we can verify that if there is a relationship among these variables, it does not last more than a year.
