In the last few years, Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) use has been increasing in the automotive industry. This steels have a high mechanical strength that allows to reduce the vehicles weight compared to conventional steels. The weight reduction leads to a decrease in fuel consumption and consequently a reduction of the environmental impacts caused by cars. However, the use of this type of steel imposes new challenges from the technological point since the formability is smaller. Besides, the mechanical loads in the stamping tools increases, as well as the heat generated by plastic deformation and friction contact. Although small variations in temperature don’t change mechanical properties of the metallic materials, the lubricants used in the sheet metal forming process are very sensitive to small variations in temperature. The main objective of this work is to quantify the temperature increase generated by plastic deformation in two AHSS, namely the DP500 steel and the DP780 steel. For this, uniaxial tensile test was studied using the finite element method, where several numerical parameters are evaluated. Temperature increases depends on Taylor and Quinney coefficient (B), which defines the fraction of plastic work converted into heat during plastic deformation. Several studies have shown that B = 0.9 for most metals, which is the commonly used value in numerical simulation. However, other studies show that β increases with plastic deformation. The heat losses are considered in the tensile test modeling, assuming natural convection in specimen zone surrounded by air and thermal contact conductance in the zones of the specimen where the grip is applied. In this work two specimens with different geometries are studied in order to analyze the influence of geometry on temperature increases. Results shown that heat generation is higher in the DP780 steel, because it has higher flow stress values. However, the geometry of the specimen (size) doesn’t have a significant impact on the expected temperature increase. Considering a grip speed of 1 mm/s, at the instant of maximum load, the DP500 steel reaches a temperature of 44.4 °C and the DP780 steel of 52.7 °C, using the initial temperature of 22 °C. Besides, the temperature rise is higher for large values of plastic strain rate. In fact, the parameter with largest influence on the temperature rise is the plastic strain rate, while the interfacial heat transfer coefficient presents a negligible impact on the predicted temperature.
