Insecure attachment, anxious and avoidant, is the outcome of an accumulation of a set of experiences with the attachment figures throughout life, which result in the construction of negative internal dynamic models about the self and the others. Studies suggest a relationship between external shame, self-compassion, mindfulness, depression and these attachment styles. However, there is an absence in studies clarifying the way in which the constructs relate with each other. The present investigation intends to analyse the impact of external shame, self-compassion and mindfulness in anxious and avoidant attachment (tested separately), controlling the effect of depression. In this sense, a battery of self-report instruments was applied to measure the variables being studied to a sample of 375 women. The results of the study of correlational nature were expectable, all of them meaningful. The comparison of the individuals with high and low levels of anxious and avoidant attachment, through t-Student tests, showed that women with higher levels of anxious and avoidant attachment report more external shame and more depressive symptoms; contrary wise, they presented less self-compassion and less mindfulness. The mediational models intended to test the mediator effect of self-compassion and mindfulness in the relationship between external shame and anxious and avoidant attachment revealed meaningful results, explaining, respectively, 26% and 23% of the dependent variable. Globally, the results suggest that self-compassion and mindfulness are fundamental competences for the quality of attachment to the others and to the self.
