In Portugal the government stipulates that school is mandatory until the 12th grade or until you reach the age of majority (18 years). When students transition from 9th grade to high school, they have to make a choice about their educational path that will restrict and define their career path. This study has a sample of 240 students from 7 th, 8 th and 9 th grades and focus into acknowledge the future perspectives of this adolescents with the assessement of the Future Time Perspective Scale (portuguese adaptation of the Future Time Perspective Scale of Stouthard & Peetsma, 1999), relating it, with some nuclear dimensions of the adaptive patterns of learning (portuguese adaptation of the Patterns of Adaptive Learning Scales of Midgley et. al, 2000) and with the social perception and well-being associated witg their contexts of socio-cultural background (portuguese adaptation of the original scale of Peetsma et. al, 2002).Results suggests a statistical significance between several factors that contribute to maintain adaptive patterns of learning, different objects/domains and extensions of the Future Time Perspective scale are positively correlated, the future time perspective in the long term predicts academic self-efficacy, and the students from urban areas, students who have leisure time activates, who never had a grade retention and the ones who already thought about their future career are in general more future oriented, either for a more immediate future, or for more remote one. |
