The Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) are chronic, relapsing diseases that include Crohn´s disease and ulcerative colitis. The rapid increase in their incidence in Asian countries, the high morbidity of these diseases, the strongly negative impact in the quality of life and the lack of therapy capable of sustaining remission are all factors that reinforce the need for research about this subject. The disease etiology is not fully understood, although it is recognized that it resides in an exacerbated immune response to the gut microbiota in genetically susceptible individuals, that can be influenced by environmental factors. The complex interaction between the immune response, genes and the microbiota requires extensive studies on the gut microbiota and the impact of its changes in immunity and intestinal inflammation. In order to achieve better diagnostic and treatment options, the understanding of the role of microbiota in the inflammatory bowel diseases is crucial. Here I will also present the SWOT analysis of my internships in both community pharmacy at the Farmácia Nova, in Aveiro, and my internship in medicinal product regulatory affairs, at INFARMED, I.P. This analysis allows the identification of the strengths and weaknesses, at an internal level, and the opportunities and threats, at an external level. The internship in community pharmacy links the theoretical knowledge, acquired throughout my education, and its application in practical situations, preparing the students for the practice of the pharmaceutical functions by confronting them with real situations. In medicinal product regulatory affairs, my internship permitted a broader vision of the pharmaceutical activities throughout the medicine lifecycle, namely its entry and maintenance in the markets. Infarmed, as the Portuguese authority of medicines, is a privileged internship site due to its contact with several pharmaceutical areas of activity, thus complementing the internship in community pharmacy. |
