In Portugal, the rising caesarean section rate has been increasingly being taken into particular account. In terms of public health, this is a problem since while not ceasing to be considered a surgical procedure, it promotes the establishment of an intermittent binding relationship, a lesser probability of breastfeeding, increases the likelihood of immunological diseases (e.g., asthma, bronchitis) in the baby as well as the development of arterial hypertension postpartum in the mother. In this regard, 704 women residing in Continental Portugal and in Portuguese Isles, subjected to caesarean sections (excluding the birth of twins), between ages 14 to 45 were inquired with the aim of observing the existence of any negative effects associated to this type of birth, both in the mother and baby. Generally, the results match with the existing literature like the presence of arterial hypertension in the mother as one of the after-effects of postpartum, as well as the existence of an intermittent mother-to-child relationship, expressed through the reduced breastfeeding time and the manifestation of respiratory diseases (e.g., asthma and bronchitis) in the baby. Since the studies that discuss the underlying aspects of caesarean section are scarce, this study contributes to cover that same shortage and to improve knowledge regarding the existence of emotional and immunological consequences of caesarean section bearing in mind a preventive view about this type of birth. Looking to the future, it’s essential to explore the negative impacts in a longitudinal perspective by monitoring the immunological and emotional development of babies born by caesarian along their life cycle.
