El oficio del humanista. Retrocesos y progresos

Abstract

Devido às adversidades do presente, os humanistas (professores e pesquisadores da área de Humanidades) procuram refúgio na ilusão de uma era dourada. A verdade é que, não é possível identificar uma época em que o humanista floresceu sem desconfiança nem escrutínio severo. Embora, admitindo que a legitimação “externa” é um desafio importante para qualquer área, entendemos que não devemos ficar sem energia durante a guerra de culturas que tem colocado as Humanidades contra as outras áreas do conhecimento por pelo menos um século meio. Não podemos esquecer que todos os domínios do conhecimento precisam de uma auto-avaliação regular e corajosa para corrigir os excessos e atender às necessidades dos novos tempos. Esta reflexão visa justamente contribuir para essa auto-avaliação, para que o retorno que, por vezes, defende as humanidades também se transforme em progresso efetivo.

Due to the adversities of the present, the humanists (teachers and researchers from the Humanities ‘area) seek refuge in the illusion of a golden age. The truth is, though, that it is not possible to identify one era in which the humanistic has flourished without distrust nor severe scrutiny. Although admitting that the “external” legitimation is an important challenge to any area, we understand that we mustn’t run out of energy during the war of cultures that has been putting the Humanities against the other areas of knowledge for at least one and a half centuries. We cannot forget that all the domains of knowledge need a regular and brave self-assessment in order to correct the excesses and suit the needs of the new times. This reflection is aimed precisely to contribute to this selfassessment, so that the return that sometimes defends the humanities can also transform into effective progress.
