Introduction: Personality is defined as a set of traits that represent individual differences in their usual tendency to behave, think or feel in conceptually interrelated ways. Its influence in cognitive-affective processes is already known, namely Emotional Regulation/ER, which encompasses the monitorization, assessment and modification of emotional reactions. On other hand, one can look at Emotional Regulation as part of a broader concept – Emotional Intelligence/EI: the ability to differentiate emotions, to access them and to generate them in order to assist thinking; to understand and regulate them as to promote emotional and intellectual growth. It is known that these constructs have an influence in psychological well-being, but the role of their relationship in psychological distress and in one’s self-assessment (self-acceptance) is yet to be studied.Aim: To understand the interaction and influence pathways between dimensions of Personality, Emotional Regulation and Emotional Intelligence in Psychological Distress and Well-being through Multiple Serial Mediation Models. Methods: 308 college students (68.1% females), with ages ranging between 17 and 34 (M = 21.2; SD = 2.36) was surveyed using the already validated self-response questionnaires: HEXACO-60, 15-item version of Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire, Cognitive Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (Supression and Cognitive Reappraisal) Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale (self-acceptance) and the 21-item Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale. Results: From the HEXACO-60 domains, Extraversion and Emotionality have the strongest correlations with both the ER and EI domains and the psychological well-being/distress outcomes. Of the ER strategies Supression showed the strongest correlations. Regarding EI, only the Express and Label and the Manage and Regulate factors showed sufficient correlations with both personality traits and our outcomes. It was shown that between Emotionality and Psychological Distress the indirect effect mediated by Emotional Regulation and Intelligence counteracts the direct effect of Emotionality. Supression and the ability to Express and Label emotions only established themselves as mediators when acting together. However, between Extraversion and Self-Acceptance, only Suppression and the Manage and Regulate factor mediated the indirect effects. Cognitive Reappraisal did not establish itself as a mediator in any of the models tested. Discussion and Conclusion: In general, both Emotional Regulation and Inteligence seem to have a role in Psychological Distress and Well-being, especially in Self-Acceptance, a more intrapersonal dimension. The results obtained regarding Cognitive Reappraisal could lead to further investigation.
