Medicamentos pediátricos: enquadramento regulamentar

Abstract

Toda a população merece ter acesso a medicamentos que satisfaçam as suas necessidades, e as crianças não podem ser a exceção à regra. Durante muitos anos, o desenvolvimento de medicamentos era focado essencialmente em adultos, descurando a população pediátrica. Desde a década passada, foram estabelecidas estruturas regulamentares nos Estados Unidos da América (EUA) e na União Europeia (UE), com o intuito de colmatar esta falha. O objetivo desta monografia é demonstrar quais as alterações que ocorreram no âmbito regulamentar dos EUA e da UE, incluindo Portugal, bem como as consequências da sua aplicação.

Everyone deserves access to medicines that suit their needs, and children cannot be the exception to the rule. For many years, drug development was focused essencially on adults, completely disregarding the pediatric population. Since the last decade, regulatory frameworks were created in the United States of America (USA) and the European Union (EU), with the purpose of making up for this shortcoming. The aim of this review is to demonstrate the changes that occurred in the regulatory sphere of the USA and the EU, including Portugal, as well as the consequences of their enforcement.
