The present study focuses an auxologic perspective of the young soccer player analyzing a set of somatic variables, functional capacities and skills. 159 soccer players with ages between 11.0 and 15.2 years were observed and divided in two age groups, in agreement with the regulations of the Portuguese Soccer Federation: infantiles (11-12 years; 11.80.5) and initiates (13-14 years; 14.10.6). Was collected the necessary somatic information to determine the somatotype. Sitting height was also determined. In the assessment of the functional capacities were used the following tests: Yo-Yo, level 1, (aerobic performance); 7 sprints (anaerobic performance); 10 x 5 shuttle run (agility); squat jump and counter movement jump (power of lower limbs). In the assessment of skills were used the following protocols: Ball control; dribbling speed; wall pass test; shooting accuracy. Among the assessments of the anthropometric, functional and skills variables and the x-rays to determine the skeletal age, didn't spend more than two weeks. In our sample the extreme stages in the distribution of the pubic hair (stage 1 and stage 4) show a smaller agreement between clinical and self-assessment, dissuading the use of the last one in the beginning and final stages of puberty. A similarity between the results of the predicted adult stature obtained through the Khamis-Guo and Khamis- Roche methodologies, confirm the last one as a good option, even without using the skeletal age. The indirect estimate of age in peak height velocity, maturity offset, showed close values with the reports in the literature for young soccer players (Bell, 1994; Philippaerts et al., 2006). The Fels method increased the skeletal ages relatively to the TW3 method, resulting in a larger percentage of subjects early matures with the first methodology and a larger percentage of late matures with the second method. This verification supports the several studies (Malina, 2004b; Malina et al., 2007a) that note the difficulty to use the skeletal age as indicator to determine a player's chronological age. Grouping the sample by maturational status, a more homogeneous distribution in the categories (late, average and early) was observed in the infantiles age-group, while in the initiates group was verified a decrease of the late mature group and an increment of the players considered early matures. This tendency is in concordance with the findings of several investigators who refer that players early matures dominate the game after 13-a4 years of age (Malina et al., 2000; Malina, 2003). The effect of the maturation on the dependent variables, controlling the effect of chronological age and body size, was larger in the initiates. The functional capacities and skills were partially explained from a group of somatic indicators and sport experience, assuming the last one (years of practice) a larger explanatory power in the initiates. Before dropping out from soccer practice, the initiates showed a larger discrepancy between them and the group of players that were kept in the training process. These differences were smaller in the infantiles age-group
