Title: | Arquitetura portuguesa em fim-de-século: entre o pós-ideológico e o pós-moderno | Other Titles: | End-of-the century portuguese architecture: between the post-ideological and post-modern | Authors: | Grande, Nuno | Issue Date: | 2013 | Publisher: | Instituto Camões | Serial title, monograph or event: | Camões : Revista de Letras e Culturas Lusófonas | Issue: | 22 | Place of publication or event: | Lisboa | Abstract: | Nas últimas décadas do século XX, a cultura e a prática arquitetónicas, em Portugal, irão tornar-se progressivamente menos politizadas, tendencialmente mais individualistas e, sobretudo, mais centradas no debate estilístico em torno do pós-modernismo do que no compromisso ético moderno que presidira às políticas sociais lançadas no período revolucionário, entre 1974 e 1976. A Arquitetura Portuguesa desse fim-de-século viverá, assim, numa condição, simultaneamente, “pós-ideológica” e “pós-moderna”. In the final decades of the 20th century, architectural culture and practice in Portugal would become progressively less politicised, more individualistic and much more focused on the stylistic debate regarding post-modernism than on the modern ethical commitment that guided the social policies of the revolutionary period between 1974 and 1976. This process involved three stages: the post-1974 years, during which Portuguese society experienced a “short-circuit” between belated institutional modernisation and the need for a post-modern acculturation; the post-1986 years, in which the country’s adherence to the European Economic Community (EEC) led to a developmental, neo-liberal and pro-European approach that changed and diversified the types of commissions and resulting responses from architects of all generations; and the post-1992 years, where increasing political and cultural Globalisation in Europe induced Portugal to become involved in the competitive cycle of major programmatic and conceptual dispersion of various architectural practices. During this end-of-the-century period, Portuguese architecture was both “post-ideological” and “post-modern” at the same time. |
