The Family Hardiness Index (FHI; McCubbin et al., 1986) is a 20-item instrument designed to assess the internal strengths of the family unit when facing stressful situations. This chapter presents the adaptation and validation studies of the Portuguese version of FHI in a sample of 144 parents of children with different chronic illnesses. Exploratory factor analysis demonstrated a three-factor solution, not totally equivalent to the original version. The overall internal reliability for FHI was adequate (α = .76) and a coefficient of .58 was obtained for the informant agreement. While comparing the total score of the FHI for parents of children diagnosed with asthma and diabetes no statistical significant differences were found. The characteristics of the Portuguese version of FHI are discussed. |
