The normal Portland cement is the most used binder in construction industry in the developed world. However, attention should be given to both the energy consumption during production, and the great amount of greenhouse gases generation. Therefore there is a need of alternative solutions sustainable from the environmental point of view. The marks remaining since ancient times in which alkaline activation was used, makes believing that the alkali-activated materials, also known as geopolymers may eventually be substitutes for traditional cement concrete. In this dissertation, it is intend to study the possibility of using a alkali-activated material as a structural element. Thus, the experimental work is concerned on the evaluation of the simple bending deformation of simply supported beams, under two symmetrical loads. For this, 15 beams were built, 5 of which with a metakaolin binder, 5 with fly ash binder and the remaining 5 with the traditional mortar, this last group to allow comparison of the results. The main objective of this dissertation is the evaluation of the deformation of beams, in different stages of the structural behaviour. It is also important to determine the capacity of theoretical methodologies to estimate these deformations. The beams with fly ash as the binding do not seem to have the necessary characteristics to constitute alternative structural elements. The beams with metakaolin ligand show a similar behaviour to that of mortar beams. It should be pointed out that this work is an exploratory work and therefore the conclusions presented here cannot be considered definitive and more studies should be carried out. |
