This thesis aims to the fore, systematize and organize a conceptual basis, a rational relationship between the characteristics of love, according to Sternberg Triangular Theory (1986) and the qualities of the relationship in terms of satisfaction and (lack of) violence. On a complementary basis, but on a different plan, it also intends to identify a rationale for the relationship between aspects of the personality of the partners and the presence of violence in intimate relationship. These two types of rational form the basis of three hypotheses about the association and / or the explanatory role of the independent variables Love components (especially the intimacy component), and personality factors Neuroticism and Agreeableness in respect of the dependent variables of satisfaction and marital violence. Thus, the specific objectives are: a) analyze the link between the different components of Sternberg love and marital satisfaction, b) study the relationship between the dimensions of love and violence in intimate relationships, c) to investigate the association between personality traits of neuroticism and Kindness with the presence of violence in intimate relationships. The sample consists of 41 subjects, 28 women and 13 men, involved in different types of relationship (dating, marriage or common law). The instruments used were the Satisfaction Scale Relationship Rusbult Couple (1983), Sternberg Love Triangular Scale (reduced version Cassepp & Teodoro, 2007), Inventory of Marital Violence (Matos, Machado & Gonçalves, 2000) and NEO –FFI (Lima & Simões, 2000). Due to the high correlation between the observed scale scores for the different components of love (.801 <r <. 893) it was not possible to test the relationship of each individual with the satisfaction of these, as required by the former, as well as with violence in intimate relationships. However, to carry out an analysis of clusters through the complete linkage method, resulting in 5 subgroups. Thus, respondents were grouped according to the patterns of response to Sternberg's Triangular Love Scale, in which the cluster 1 is the one that has higher value of total love. In this analysis, it was possible to find other differences in different clusters, in particular as regards meeting and neuroticism levels. Regarding the investigation of the relationship of personality traits (Neuroticism and Agreeableness) with the propensity for violence in intimate relationships, a negative trend was found (Cronbach's alpha -.195) between Kindness and the propensity to practice behaviors violent. With respect to Neuroticism, values not statistically significant.
