Reinventar o Edifício Avenida : projeto de reconstrução

Abstract

Construído em 1893, o Teatro Circo Príncipe Real D.Luís Filipe, também conhecido como Teatro Avenida, foi demolido com o objetivo de construir o Centro Comercial Avenida, em meados dos anos 80. Este foi projetado, pelo arquiteto Carlos de Almeida e pelo engenheiro Celestino Quaresma, para uma cota mais elevada, na rua Antero de Quental. Mais tarde, decidiu-se que o centro comercial deveria conectarse com a Avenida Sá da Bandeira-uma das mais importantes avenidas de Coimbra-e tornar-se numa ligação entre duas diferentes cotas da cidade. Cheio de queridas e divertidas memórias, mantidas pela população mais antiga de Coimbra, o edifício Avenida foi um lugar dinâmico de cultura e comércio. Todavia, com o passar dos anos, maiores centros comerciais foram construídos e a importância deste edifício foi esquecida pelos cidadãos, diminuindo assim, a utilização desta estrutura e causando a decadência desse centro comercial. Reconhecendo a importância do edifício Avenida é, realmente necessário um projeto que dê uma “terceira vida” a este edifício. Apesar das várias tentativas de remodelar o edifício, através de estudos e simulações que incluíram demolições parciais no mesmo, cheguei à conclusão que uma demolição total seria a melhor opção. Esta decisão foi motivada por várias razões tais como a volumetria exagerada e o impacto agressivo do edifício na sua envolvente urbana. Além disso, a sua estrutura irregular condiciona a criação de um projeto com uma organização e estrutura clara, racional e coerente. Deste modo, o meu objetivo é conceber uma nova construção bem resolvida a nível formal, espacial e estrutural que garanta uma adaptação contemporânea, mas que mantenha a essência cultural deste lugar. Por outras palavras, um edifício em constante reinvenção arquitetónica que preserva a sua memória. O propósito desta dissertação é, assim, responder às questões que a reconstrução do Avenida propõe, concebendo uma nova estrutura, uma melhor inserção na envolvente urbana e uma volumetria mais funcional.

Built in 1893, the Príncipe Real D. Luís Filipe Circus Theatre, also known as Avenida Theatre, was demolished in order to build the Avenida Shopping Center in the mid-nineteen-eighties. It was designed by architect Carlos de Almeida and engineer Celestino Quaresma at a higher level over Antero de Quental street. Then, they decided that the shopping center should be connected with Sá da Bandeira Avenueone of the most important avenues of Coimbra-and become a linking between two different topographical levels of the city. Full of dear memories kept by the elder people that live in Coimbra, Avenida was a dynamic place of culture and shopping. However, as the years went by, bigger shopping centers were built in Coimbra and the importance of this building was forgotten by the citizens, decreasing the use of the structure and causing the decadence of this shopping center. Recognizing the importance of Avenida a plan for the “third life” of this building is truly necessary. Even though several attempts to remodel the building were made, through studies and simulations, including partial demolition of the building, I came to the conclusion that demolition would be the best option. This decision was motivated by several reasons such as its exaggerated volumetry and the aggressive impact on the urban surroundings. Furthermore, its irregular structure restricts the creation of a project with a clear, rational and logical organization and structure. Thus, my proposal was to conceive a new contemporary building that has a clearer formal, spatial and structural design and that guarantees the cultural essence of the place. In other words, a building in constant architectural reinvention that preserves its memory. The purpose of this essay is to answer the questions of the reconstruction of the “Avenida” proposes. This is, to provide a good structure, an improved insertion in the urban surroundings and a functional volumetry.
