The last three decades witnessed a significant and progressive increase of scientific matters in theatre plays. Influenced by this interesting singularity, this investigation tries to establish which were the first theatrical instances of the meeting between theatre and modern science, studying theatre plays written during the period of its emergence. The result is a journey along the history of theatre, science and the european societies of the sixteenth, seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, through the study of a body of theatre plays that cover a wide thematic spectrum from the pre-scientific arts like astrology, alchemy and natural magic, to the first representations of modern science. This study is organized in six chapters. The first gathers and analyses a group of plays that reflect a intrinsic presence of astrology in the social beliefs and practises in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The second chapter studies theatre plays where we can find the arts associated to deceaving and fraud. In the third chapter we address the particular case of El Astrologo Fingido, with its wide influence and posterior adaptations by other playwrights. The fourth chapter is dedicated to Molière’s “medical plays” and the dramatic exploration of medicine by the French author. The fifth chapter consists of an analysis of the tragedy The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and the relation it establishes between knowledge and power. Finally, in the last chapter we analyse a group of plays where we can detect a progressive inscription of modern science, associated with the social characters of the virtuoso, the projector and the natural philosopher, as well as with the public discussion about feminine education and knowledge.
