Abstract: This work focuses on the photophysical study of two poly(acrylic acid) polymers (PAA), with different molecular weights (2 and 450 kg/mol), randomly hydrophobically modified with pyrene in different percentages. This study was carried out in liquid state in solvents as: methanol, dioxane, mixtures of dioxane:water, water (at different pH values) and water:surfactant (at two pH values). These were followed by absorption, steady state and time-resolved fluorescence (ns and ps) techniques. As additional tools in understanding such complex system it was also made use of statistics, computer simulations, dynamics modelation and fluorescence data from parents compounds, namely, two oligomers linking the two pyrenes by alkylic chain of three [1Py(3)1Py] and ten [1Py(10)1Py] atoms of carbon and some bipyrenylacetamides. The results show that the size of the PAA chain, the degree and location of tagging fluorescent probes strongly determine the photophysical behavior of these compounds. The molecular modeling studies allowed the interpretation of these different behaviors, namely that the excimer formation of polymers modified with pyrene studied here depends primarily on the encounter of the probes at short distancse and that the synthesis may be important in the localization of the chromophores. Moreover, the simulation allowed to obtain information that could be important on the interpretation of other polymers others than randomly and hidrophobically pyrene modified poly(acrylic acid) polymers. The temperature and solvent dependent behaviour of 1,3-di(1,1’-pyrenyl)propane [1Py(3)1Py] and 1,10-di(1,1’-pyrenyl)decane [1Py(10)1Py] have been extensively investigated. Nevertheless, and to the best of our knowledge, no study has been performed in dioxane:water mixtures. These same mixtures were used in the study of the photophysical behaviour of hydrophobically modified labelled polymers with pyrene. It is therefore of relevance to study the influence of the solvent qualityon the photophysics of 1Py(3)1Py and 1Py(10)1Py. These compounds do not constitute the perfect model compounds for the PAAMePy polymers, since with the randomly labelled polymers the poly(acrylic acid) main chain introduces electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions as important factors in their photophysics, in addition to the chain strain and solvent barriers present in the model compounds. Attempts to label an 1,n-alkanodioic chain with 1-pyrenemethylacetamine groups have been made; however a pure compound could not be obtained. Although, the synthesis was not successful, another series of oligomers were studied that however do not possess the acrylic part, have the pyrene units linked with the same chain (methylacteamide). Steady state and time-resolved measurements in a series of solvents are presented for the 1Py(CH2NHC=O)nCH2-1Py oligomers with a chain constituted by n (= 1, 2 or 3). For all compounds except for the parent (at low concentrations) excimer fluorescence was observed. From the fluorescence decay analysis together with the information given by the steady state, a kinetic scheme was proposed for all compounds which allow the determination of the several rate constants involved as a function of the chain length.
