A petrolífera celebrou, em 1957, com o governo português o primeiro contrato de concessão para pesquisa e exploração de petróleo em Cabinda. Com o início da guerra colonial em Angola, em 1961, a Gulf teve de suspender os trabalhos em Cabinda, quando o Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) controlou essa região. No entanto, poucos meses depois, em 1962, Portugal recuperou Cabinda e reforçou a segurança. Assim a petrolífera pôde voltar a desenvolver os trabalhos. Esse foi o início da colaboração entre as duas partes. Em 1966, a Gulf descobriu petróleo em Cabinda e, nesse mesmo ano, renovou o contrato de concessão com o governo português. Nessa altura, Portugal travava três guerras em simultâneo, o que exigia um grande esforço financeiro. Desse ano em diante, a cada renovação figuraram nos contratos cláusulas requerendo o pagamento de avultados montantes, não encontrados em outros vínculos assinados durante o período da guerra colonial em Angola. The issue at hand in this Master's thesis is the assistance of Gulf Oil Corporation to Portugal during the colonial war in Angola. In 1957, was signed the first concession contract for research and exploitation of oil in Cabinda between Gulf and the Portuguese government. With the beginning of the colonial war in Angola in 1961, the Gulf had to suspend their work in Cabinda, when Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) controlled this region. However, few months later, in 1962, Portugal regained Cabinda and tightened security, so the oil corporation could further develop the work. That was the beginning of the collaboration between the two parties. In 1966, Gulf discovered oil in Cabinda and in the same year renewed the concession agreement with the Portuguese government. At that time, Portugal was fighting three wars simultaneously, which required a great financial effort. From that year onwards, in each renewal contracts figured clauses requiring the payment of large sums of money, not found in others contracts signed during the colonial war in Angola. |
